About

Founded in 2016 by Daniel Smith and Michael Young, the studio has developed a reputation for designing and delivering distinctive, well-made buildings within the UK for a wide range of public, residential and commercial clients. These include, bespoke one-off houses, hotels, large scale social housing schemes, event pavilions, and buildings for education. We work in ecologically and historically sensitive sites, including National Parks, city-centre conservation areas and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Our projects have gained national recognition from awards, including RIBA, LABC and civic trust awards. Our work has been published by renowned architectural publications and books such as The Architects Journal, Building Design, Dezeen, Grand Designs Magazine and 21st Century Houses: RIBA Award-Winning Homes

Our studio thrives on versatility—our team’s dynamic energy empowers us to take on projects of all shapes and scales, from intimate new-build homes to sweeping masterplans and the bold transformation of heritage-listed landmarks. Every project begins with curiosity. We dive deep into the site and brief, uncovering hidden potential through thoughtful, structured research. We listen—closely and with intent—to the people who will live with and within our designs. Through open dialogue with clients, collaborators, and specialists, we shape a creative process that’s as inclusive as it is inventive.

When projects grow in complexity, we grow with them. We’re experienced in navigating layered briefs and engaging diverse stakeholders, ensuring that every voice finds space within the design. Our ideas take form through hand sketches, detailed drawings, and tactile models—brought to life in a studio that buzzes with conversation, creativity, and critique. From concept to delivery, we embrace digital tools that support collaboration and precision, working seamlessly with design teams and consultants to bring ambitious visions to life. At every stage, we design with purpose, imagination, and care.

Teaching and research
In addition to our studio work, we are committed to teaching in architecture schools and developing research networks with universities to enrich our design process and reveal new points of reference.  The studio has taught at architecture schools in the UK including, Liverpool University, LJMU, UCLAN, Bartlett School of Architecture, Westminster University.
